@Ariconte: Where is this newsletter from? It appears to be a few sentences rather than a template... it also should include information about how to opt-out of MMS messages in the future. Happy editing, WikiPancake ? ? 06:18, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
@WikiPancake:The text is from Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney. I just want to let the invite list know it is on. Is this not the correct tool??? Regards, Ariconte (talk) 06:33, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
@Ariconte: This is the right place if you're request a message to be sent to multiple users at once. However, all newsletters/alerts using mass messaging must have a notice that shows the directions about how to opt-out of future messaging, as many people decide to not receive the meetup newsletter after receiving it once, or if they quit the project. The newsletter should also be a template with enough information and notable enough to be sent out to mutliple users. WikiPancake ? ? 06:39, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
You win, I give up. Ariconte (talk) 09:41, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Note it is not necessary for the message to be a "template". Although it's convenient to put it in a standalone page, it's not a big hardship to copy and paste inline content from the request. isaacl (talk) 20:25, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Ariconte I've tried to help out a bit here, see distribution list page Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney/Invite/MMS and a sample for your message here: Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney/Invite/September2016. Gereon K. where did your invitation list members come from (it is much bigger than Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Loves Women/Members). -- xaosflux Talk 18:10, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Xaosflux Those are the editors that were informed about this project recently and manually by the initiator Olaniyan Olushola, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Olaniyan_Olushola His talk passe messages did not include a link the the project page, so I was suggesting to him that he should create a new template and next time send the invitation out by Mass message instead of manually. --Gereon K. (talk) 18:26, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
@Xaosflux and Gereon K.:, though i may be wrong, i guess the Requested delivery date for the mass message was set at "any time" If that is right, i wish to state that we will appreciate if this notification would be delivered before the commencement date of the contest:20th September 2016. Best Regards. Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 19:23, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
I thought asap would be too impolite, so I used the term "any time" instead. --Gereon K. (talk) 19:35, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
These are usually assumed to be between "now" and the date - date is really asked in case there is a reason to not send it early. I'm on the wrong device to send this right now but anyone can action or I may be able to later today. -- xaosflux Talk 21:10, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

 Done WikiPancake ? ? 13:28, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
MMS Sender Note: There's a slight problem with the message -- because I copy+pasted the content of mass mailing, it didn't send out the nowiki marks with the message, meaning that instead of showing {{Usercheck-full}}, it shows:
Example (talk · message · contribs · global contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · user creation · block user · block log · count · total · logs · summary · email | lu · rfas · rfb · arb · rfc · lta · checkuser · spi · socks confirmedsuspected | rfar · rfc · rfcu · ssp | current rights · rights log (local) · rights log (global/meta) | rights · renames · blocks · protects · deletions · rollback · admin · logs | UHx · AfD · UtHx · UtE)
...which led to some confusion. To prevent this in the future, I suggest you to convert your message into a template -- it makes me and a lot of other MMs senders to send your message easily. Because some people already replied I won't revert it. Thanks, WikiPancake ? ? 07:35, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

This thing is heinous

Mass spam messages should always be opt-in, not opt-out. This thing is completely backwards. And yes, I'm using "spam" as a general pejorative for anything that someone else has decided is so important that they need to shotgun blast it to the entire world because their pet cause is a special snowflake. -- Legalize (talk) 22:23, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Is this a bot? - No its mass spaming

If this account is automatic, shouldn't it haver a username that reflects it as such? Also, why is it ignoring the "nobots" tag on my user page? Optimist on the run (talk) 18:50, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

@Optimist on the run: This account is not a bot in the normal sense, but rather a part of the MassMessage extension of MediaWiki, which is probably why it ignored your tag. It's a relatively new feature that allows any user with the "massmessage" user right to send mass messages through Special:MassMessage. If you want to opt-out of all mass messages through this feature, add your user talk page to the category Category:Opted-out of message delivery. Mz7 (talk) 21:46, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
So instead of delivering messages to people who care it spams everybody? Great invention ..Sicherlich Post 22:28, 21 November 2016 (UTC) yeah you can opt out; after you got the first message and you figure out who acutlly wrote to you ( not the person who signed the message). pretty much like spam; just configure your spamfilter and it's not issue
The messages should be from a named account, a point of contact if you feel, like I do, that the messages are spam Vicarage (talk) 23:48, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Why did the "ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!" message get sent to me twice?

As the subject line header says, why did the "ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!" message get sent to my user talk page twice, just six minutes apart? I don't mind getting it once, but why twice? Is there some content difference between the two messages that I'm not seeing? --Lowellian (reply) 23:22, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

REQ: Can the delivery system exclude delivery to blocked users?

Hey all, my watchlist just got pounded by a trillion posts to users, many of whom are either temporarily or indefinitely blocked. As a longtime gnome, I've probably got thousands of user talk pages watchlisted. Can message delivery be limited to unblocked users, or at least to users who are not indeffed? Either approach would be an improvement I think. Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 05:16, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Just because users are blocked or indeffed doesn't mean they can't keep up with areas of the project. If they're gone, I'd say just add Category:Opted-out of message delivery on there. Alternatively, we should look into excluding the bot from watchlists by default. Mdann52 (talk) 07:37, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Please send a message to pending changes reviewers to inform them of a new template that they may find useful.

  • Subject: Pending changes backlog display
  • Recipients: Category:Wikipedia pending changes reviewers (currently 2,223 editors: in this category because they have added a userbox or topicon indicating that they are in the pending changes reviewer group)
  • Message content: at User:Noyster/PC template notice

Not done Noyster, Special:Statistics shows there are over 6000 pending changes reviewers - but even with only 2000 categorized ones this is too big of a non opt-in group to mass messaging for this type of message. A better place to get their attention may be MediaWiki:Pendingchanges-list, which you can request on that message's talk page (use an edit request) - this way it will be displayed to people who are actually using the PC review tool. -- xaosflux Talk 21:50, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Is there any way to prevent mass messages from including nonfree files?

Right now, File:Noisebridge_logo.png appears on nearly 150 user talk pages, as a result of its inclusion in a mass message.

Not the first time I've seen this happening, and it takes some work to clean this up. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by many administrators since 2006. (talk) 20:19, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Short of listing each unfree file on MediaWiki:Bad image list - which would max out it's capacity soon, I think - I don't think there is an inherent method. As for this specific case, tracking down the user(s) responsible and reminding them of WP:NFCC#9 would be the first step. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 21:06, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

@Thibbs: this is  Done - I made minor tweaks to Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Newsletter/20170702 to specify the opt-out directions an include a date stamper (archive bots get testy without a date in a section sometimes). -- xaosflux Talk 14:33, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for your assistance! Yunshui ?? 12:18, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

On hold Hi @Yunshui: The target lists are in the wrong format for this extension and will need to be converted before this can be used. I may be able to work on this later today, but anyone else is welcome to. -- xaosflux Talk 12:43, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
The formatting is an "easy" tweak, however see below. -- xaosflux Talk 12:54, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
On hold There appears to be more then a formatting issue - I split a few samples from list 1 to 1a for testing a small run, some of these are invalid targets, replying at the election coordination talk. -- xaosflux Talk 12:50, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
We would prefer to only send the message to eligible voters who have edited in the last year (as specified here) but have been unable to come up with a suitable list in the available time. --DoRD (talk) 12:57, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
FWIW I have opposed doing this, as I think mass messaging about 10 times as many users as we intended to (and have consensus for) is basically spamming. (see http://spam.abuse.net/others/simplespam.shtml - "Spam is the same thing lots and lots of times.") Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:24, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
I've emailed the guys about this task - I'll get this sorted ASAP. Mdann52 (talk) 22:10, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
  • The replacement lists referenced from Wikipedia_talk:Arbitration_Committee_Elections_December_2017/Coordination#Almost_ready_to_send will be used instead. If anyone has any last min issues with this, please reply there. -- xaosflux Talk 15:08, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
